Bonaire Trip Report

Bonaire: The shore diving capital of the world. As our intrepid group of travelers will point out, it's pretty dang good from a boat, too!

With eighteen certified divers, and two eager snorkelers, we headed to Bonaire to experience what NOAA recently regarded as the most pristine coral reef environment, inhabited by more species of fish than any other Caribbean island. After a week of incredible diving, we couldn't agree more!

Our group was spoiled with unlimited boat diving, but added numerous dives from the dock at Buddy Resort on the lookout for seahorse, frogfish and squid. For most, it was a very short search before our prey was spotted and the strobes of the cameras started firing. As the rest of the group will be quick to point out, I seemed to be the only one to miss out on the squid sightings, but at least the frogfish and seahorse were in abundance!
Although I could have filled two logbooks with all the critters we saw during our week in Bonaire, my highlights included numerous frogfish, seahorse sightings almost daily, a lone Eagle Ray cruising past the group, and the chance to get our two snorkelers diving! Both had the chance to log a couple of dives on the house reef, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed we did enough to convince them to come over to the dark side of scuba diving! I've been teaching for several years, and nothing gets me more excited than seeing the looks on new divers faces as they descend for the first time and experience the sport I am so passionate about.
We also experienced a first on one of our trips, a minor medical emergency with a trip to the Bonaire emergency room. A slippery deck and a bit of boat rocking combined for a fast fall to the floor for one of our guests. A broken humorous (that's the upper arm bone to the rest of us, not her funny bone!) was the end result, but a quick thinking dive crew and a great spirit by all made for a new learning experience.
Before we knew it, our week of diving was over. Little did we know some of the week's best adventures would come during our "rest" day! A quick stop into the Donkey Sanctuary ended up in a several hour adventure with more laughs than I ever expected. We continued exploring the island and came across Bonaire Land Sailing (www.landsailingbonaire.com/landsailing.html), basically windsurfing around a track in a Blokart. To say this experience was awesome would be an understatement! Most in our group ranked this as their #1 memory from the trip.

A friendly group, a great diving destination and fun topside activities were the perfect mix for another successful Underwater Phantaseas adventure!

6 days of unlimited boat diving as well as unlimited shore diving will fully enable us to take advantage of Bonaire's legendary diving. The water is warm and generally flat calm. This lack of surface turbulence and the fact that Bonaire's surrounding reef wall lies directly offshore make this one of the world's easiest and most enjoyable diving destinations. In addition, there are many opportunities for a variety of shore excursions.

Call or stop by the shop for more information or to see video on the diving in Bonaire. We are limiting the trip to just 16 people, so please don't delay in signing up. A $300 deposit and a signed trip agreement are required to hold your spot with us in the shore diving capital.
