Tonga and New Zealand Post Trip Report | |
|
Magical creatures. That’s all I can think of when the thought of a Humpback whale and her calf swim by in their graceful strokes. The thought of them being hunted for meat or research* (see Whale Wars for more info) truly brings tears to my eyes after spending a week with them in Tonga. |

The Kingdom of Tonga (the only Monarchy still in existence in the Pacific) happens to be one of the vacation spots for migrating Humpback Whales. Calving, heat runs, logging and playing are all on their list of things to do, although in varying degrees of importance depending on the whale! |

Our goal was to see them doing all of the above, and we were not disappointed. We were able to see peduncal, pectoral and tail slaps, breaching and logging, but the highlight was definitely swimming with mothers and calves. |
|
True grace underwater is defined by their movements. How a 40 ton animal can dance under the sea will always be a mystery, but I was moved every time I entered the water.

We added New Zealand to this expedition, and it ranks as one of the most beautiful, friendly countries we’ve visited. |
| We were lucky enough to have 2 time Oscar winner Hammond Peek lead our Lord of the Rings tour, a highlight for many on the trip. |

| A few days in Queenstown, the Adventure Capital of the World, added highlights like Jet Boating down the Shotover Canyon, Steamship cruises, observing Kiwi birds, Doubtful Sound visit and daily views of the Remarkables mountain range. | ![]() |

Luckily we visited Christchurch first, and were safely in Queenstown on the day of the earthquake. |
| A leisurely day enjoying gondola rides and shopping along the shore of Lake Wakatipu sent us home with an appreciation of the country and a promise to return. |

Tonga is very much about its culture, with its people welcoming,
relaxed and easygoing. Time often seems to stand still as you experience the gentle pace of the Tongans lifestyle.
You are invited to join Underwater Phantaseas as we journey to the South Pacific to swim with humpback whales. Humpback whales migrate from their summer feeding grounds in Antarctica to winter breeding grounds in Tonga’s warm tropical waters. During their winter sojourn, they gather around the islands to mate and give birth. We will spend our days watching, observing and swimming with these gentle giants. This experience will be sure to take your breath away.
We’ll spend seven nights at the Sandy Beach Resort, located right on the beach. The crystal-blue waters and white sandy beaches will mesmerize you.
When you aren’t out snorkeling with the whales or diving, spend your time reading in a hammock, kayaking or horseback riding on the beach.
You’ll enjoy the spectacular views from the restaurant, located right on the property. A European breakfast and delicious 3-course dinner are included every day.
The humpback whales shy away from divers bubbles. To ensure our close encounters, we will be on snorkel only. One dedicated dive day is included in our itinerary, with the option to dive each day depending on our interaction with the whales.
Call or stop by the shop for more information on this unique destination. This trip is limited to 12 guests. A $500 deposit and a signed trip agreement are required to hold your spot with us in Tonga. Yes I'm Interested, please contact me! |
